SharePoint Site Definitions by a real web designer...

Did you ever wonder to see a WSS site that really doesnt look like a WSS site? And a site that has not been obviously built with FrontPage 2003?

Update: There was a small bug in the install_templates.bat file, you can now download the updated files from here. (I have also added an uninstall_templates.bat file, btw).

Since most SharePoint bloggers have already mentioned and posted about the WSS Applications templates Microsoft has just made available as free downloads here. BTW, it looks like MS subcontracted the delivery of these 30 templates to Quilogy (just look at the InfoPath Submit to SharePoint connections ;-) .

I won't go over the list again but just provide a few script files for those who would like to install them all and then create 1 site per template. Installing 30 templates and then creating 30 sites is a quite lenghty and boring process so I thought I could help you out a little bit (there are indeed 60 site templates as each application is shipped with a "basic" template based on the standard WSS look and a "custom" template with a more trendy look).

To take advantage of my script files, you'll thus have to do the following:

1. Download ALL the WSS templates from http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sppt/wssapps/default.mspx

2. Unpack them all to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\BIN

3. Download my bat files from here and unzip them to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\BIN

4. Run the install_templates.bat file first (you will notice that I don't follow MS recommendations and I prefer to install them with stsadm.exe so that I can use them from all my site collections).

5. Edit the create_sites.bat file and replace http://localhost/sites/apps with whatever URL you want to use. I personally preferred to create my custom sites under a single site collection because it's easier to have a consolidated view of all of them using a treeview webpart like Tom's smartpart).

5 bis. IF you have previously installed site templates with stsadm, you will not be able to run create_sites.bat as is, because it assumes there are no other template installed with stsadm (I learnt it the hard way...). So you'll need to run stsadm -o enumtemplates to get the number of the globally installed template (something like _GLOBAL#3 if you have already installed 3 global templates) and then replace in create_sites.bat _GLOBAL#1 with _GLOBAL_#4, _GLOBAL#2 with _GLOBAL_#5, and so on... I know it's a pain, I know this issue could easily be solved with a intelligent macro in Excel, but I'm just too lazy to do it right now...

6. Run create_sites.bat and go get a coffee or two (depending on your server performance) ;-)

When you're back, you should be all set!

What's new in the next InfoPath version?

A recurring feature that customers have asked for is the ability to fill out InfoPath forms (not design them) without requiring InfoPath on the client machines.

Well, the good news is we'll be closer to this functionality in the next Office version (codenamed "Office 12") !

As mentioned on the Microsoft Watch website , Chris Capossela demonstrated the very first demo of InfoPath 12 and more specifically the ability to fill out an InfoPath form inside a single web browser.

Whether or not this feature will be available in an hypothetical InfoPath Forms Server or with SharePoint Portal Server "12" is unclear right now, but at least we now know that this feature will be available in some way or another.

By the way, these news should leave some room for our existing partners (such as InfoView, InfoJet Soft, open-source projects...) for customers who don't want or can't afford buying SPS or an InfoPath Forms Server...

InfoPath en mode web...

Une des questions particulièrement fréquentes que l'on me pose en clientèle (mais aussi parfois chez Microsoft même !) est la suivante : doit-on avoir InfoPath 2003 pour remplir ou simplement visualiser un formulaire InfoPath? Je prends alors souvent un air embarrassé avant de répondre simplement : Oui... (notons cependant qu'il est possible d'exporter un formulaire InfoPath vers une vue HTML mais l'on perd alors les références XML).

Cependant, il existe un certain nombre d'outils permettant de convertir des formulaires InfoPath vers des formulaires web, certains gratuits (enfin, un seul vraiment, à ma connaissance), d'autres commerciaux. Sans vouloir rentrer dans les limitations de chacun de ces produits (et il y en a !), le but de cet article est au moins de les lister (sans que je m'engage à ce que ma liste soit exhaustive - aidez-moi donc à la compléter si nécessaire !) :

Développements Outlook : plein de nouveautés avec Visual Studio Tools For Office 2005 !

Comme vous le savez sûrement déjà, c'est à grand renfort de publicité que Microsoft prépare la sortie du .NET Framework 2.0 et de Visual Studio 2005 (notez que le ".NET" de Visual Studio .NET 2002 et 2003 a disparu...) et pour vous donner l'eau à la bouche, un focus particulier a été mis sur le développement Outlook très récemment, et en particulier les "add-ins" (ou "compléments" pour les puristes de la langue de Molière).

En particulier, vous trouverez :

1. Un template de projet "Outlook Add-in" pour Visual Studio 2005
2. Des formations
3. Des exemples de code
3. Des aides "Intellisense" pour aider au développement
4. Et enfin un projet complet permettant d'exporter les tâches Outlook vers un rapport Word 2003 (avec l'utilisation d'XML).

Bonjour à tous,

Je suis un peu honteux de ne donner de mes nouvelles qu'après une si longue période de silence, mais le temps me manque pas mal, surtout pour un blog "commercial" ;-) Alors oui, je ne pense pas que l'on puisse cacher que les blogs Microsoft sont là pour vanter la valeur de la plateforme Microsoft, mais d'un autre côté, on n'oblige personne à les lire...

J'ai constaté en tout cas que mon premier post avait généré pas mal de réactions et je vous en remercie à tous. A vrai dire, peu de gens chez nos clients osent nous faire des reproches aussi frontaux et finalement, ces blogs commerciaux sont assez sains, puisqu'ils nous permettent (enfin me permettent en tout cas) de me remettre en question...

Pour ce qui est de l'impression PDF, très objectivement, je ne sais pas non plus pourquoi elle n'est pas intégrée à Word et mes questions sur le sujet sont restées lettres mortes.

En revanche, pour ce qui est de la valeur de Microsoft Office par rapport à OpenOffice et StarOffice, je pense que nous avons beaucoup de points forts à mettre en avant, mais je reviendrai sur ce sujet un peu plus tard, si vous le voulez bien (car c'est un sujet vaste et qui requiert une certaine préparation).

Pour revenir sur le sujet un peu plus simple dont je voulais traiter aujourd'hui, vous pourrez trouver quelques pointeurs intéressants pour déterminer dans quels cas InfoPath ou un Smart Document Word/Excel répondront de manière optimale à une problématique documentaire d'entreprise. Ces articles sont tous en anglais, mais ils sont assez utiles pour comprendre les fonctionalités respectives de chacune de ces solutions :
